Karmascore | Case Study

One of the longest ongoing studies by the Harvard Study of Adult Development discovered that the quality of our relationships is a significant predictor of longevity and overall health.

The health and wellness app space is saturated with apps that measure sleep health, mental health, calorie intake, meditation routines, and more. But there are few apps that measure the health of our interpersonal relationships.

Initially joining as a branding specialist, my role in Karmascore broadened to Product Designer, Co-Founder, and Chief Creative Director.

Understanding our Audience

To better understand our audience, we created user personas to help capture the reasons or motives for using an app like Karmascore.

04

Competition

Karmascore had few direct competitors on the market, so we sought out health and wellness apps with a journaling feature, and took notes of what drove their success.

  • Official and Smart Couple shared Karmascore's primary focus, but lacked opportunities to record multiple relationships and score.

  • Reviews complained about confusing analytics, and cumbersome entries.

  • The best performing apps had simple intuitive design, customization, and detailed tracking abilities.

Ideation

What I found between research papers on journaling apps, indirect competitors, and their app reviews, was recorded and sorted using affinity mapping.

Then drawing visual inspiration from high-performing indirect competitors like Daylio, and using the findings from my research, I drafted wireframes.

Bringing it to Life

Using the Adobe Creative Suite and Figma, I brought the app from wireframes to a high fidelity clickable prototype. I collaborated with our developers, working end-to-end to help bring the app to life.

How Karmascore made me Grow

  • Pursued a Google UX Research certification to formalize the process behind product design decisions

  • Collaborated cross-functionally as a bridge between creative vision and technical feasibility

  • Gained firsthand experience with how design systems differ between print and digital — from the flexibility of a printed page to the strict constraints of screen-based UI, where platform limitations directly shape every decision
